There are a variety of rental options available depending on your location! Whether you're within the city limits or in the outskirts, there are rental companies that can accommodate you.

Within the city limits, you can rent electric scooters from companies such as Gogoro, WeMo, or iRent. Simply download the app, fill in your personal information, upload pictures of your resident card, Taiwan-issued driver's license, and credit card information, and wait for approval. Once approved, you can use the app to search for the nearest available rental scooter and hit the road. These rental companies charge by the minute and bill you after your trip, making it super convenient.

iRent also offers gas-powered scooter rentals with several stations located around the city. iRent scooters are ideal for longer journeys as you can fill up with gas while continuing your ride. To rent an iRent scooter, you will need a Taiwan-issued driver's license and your resident card.

Other private scooter rental companies are also available, usually located near train stations. While they may not be as visually appealing, they offer a good selection of motorcycles and scooters at a reasonable price. Some of them charge as little as NT$200-300 per day.

As a foreigner, I personally had little luck renting a scooter with my foreign driver's license. Even smaller rental companies would turn me away because my driver's license wasn't issued locally. However, once I obtained a local driver's license, it opened up the island to me, especially when taking trips beyond Taipei. Wherever I went, whether it was Yilan, Hsinchu, Hualien, Taichung, Tainan, Penghu, Taitung, or Kaohsiung, I could always rent a scooter. The locals were often surprised when a foreigner not only spoke Mandarin but also proudly handed over a local driver's license.
