Do scooters use drum brakes instead of disk brakes?

It usually depends on the specific type, year and model of the scooter or motorcycle. Both drum brakes and disc brakes are used in scooters and motorcycles, although disc brakes are becoming more common among newer scooter models.

Drum brakes are a type of brake that uses a circular drum that rotates with the wheel. When the brake is applied, brake shoes inside the drum press against the walls of the drum, creating friction and slowing the wheel down.

Drum brakes are generally less expensive and simpler to maintain than disc brakes, but they tend to be less effective at dissipating heat.

Disc brakes, on the other hand, use a flat disc rotor that is attached to the wheel. When the brake is applied, brake pads clamp onto the rotor, creating friction and slowing the wheel down.

Disc brakes are generally more effective at dissipating heat and can provide better braking performance, especially in wet conditions. They are also usually easier to modulate, which can be important for certain types of riding.

In general, higher-end scooters or motorcycles are more likely to use disc brakes, while lower-end scooters may use drum brakes. However, this is not a hard and fast rule, and there are many scooters and motorcycles on the market that use both types of brakes.
